May Day

It's already May. Really?!? Well, I suppose if I kept up with my blog, I'd be more aware of the date. Perhaps I should make blogging my quarter-year resolution. Perhaps.

Anyhow, I've been having fun playing with some photos I took previously and re-editing them. I've acquired an overlay/texture pack from Jessica Drossin's Textures and I'm having way too much fun. Take a look at these before and afters...

I took out the pole, took out my other son's head on the left and added the clouds in the sky.

This is one I took of my very good friend when she was pregnant last year. We were fortunate to catch a beautiful sunset.

I added the clouds in the sky and changed the tone a bit.

The last one isn't a before and after, but I wanted to share these fantastic photos my 7-year-old took of my youngest and me. Looks like I'm going to have an assistant soon...

I Like to Play!

So it's the second time I'm participating in Everyday Element's "Show Your Skills" weekly edit. I'm having fun with these! Here's my edit on the photo, starting with the original first. And again, although I did not take the photo, I still enjoy editing it in Photoshop to inject my own style and personality into it.

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Banana?

This week's I Heart Faces theme is: Orange. The color or the fruit? I'm assuming the color. Plus, I don't have any pictures of oranges (the fruit.) Anyhow, here is my orange photo. I had to post one of my monkey. This Halloween costume was soooo fitting...

I Like to Play!

So I like taking pictures and editing them. Really, really. I discovered a website that has a weekly edit feature and being the geek I am, I had to partake. And although I did not take this photo, it was just as fun putting my spin on it. Take a look, starting with the original version first:

I edited this using PS and wanted to bring out the beautiful colors the sunset was reflecting. I also added a little bit of texture to it, adding some depth.

Fix-It-Friday!

Happy Friday, Everyone! It's Fix-It-Friday at I Heart Faces, and again, I'm as surprised as you are that I'm posting this before 11pm. The planets must be aligned. Here's my edit, starting with the original first.

I cropped the photo to bring you into her beautiful little face. I also converted it to b&w to enhance the emotion and added some textures on top. I always seems to like b&w photos with textures.

Have a great weekend! And head on over to I Heart Faces to see more great edits!

Love that Shot!

I know, I know, this may not look like a "fall"photo, but it is. This is my oldest in his Halloween costume. We were getting ready for a block party, and of course, I had to get my camera ready. I love how it turned out, especially with the angle it's at. I'm a fan of pushing in closer and closer and turning the camera while I'm shooting, experimenting and being inspired by the moment. I'm also loving textures again. Can you tell?

Fix-It-Friday!

Happy Friday everyone! And despite battling a sinus infection and strep throat, I must find the time to participate in Fix-It-Friday, over at I Heart Faces. All I have to say is Thank goodness for antibiotics. Here's my quick edit for today, starting with the original version first:

I cropped it quite a bit, omitting the shadow of the person standing nearby. I also tilted it, added some texture and decreased the orange color while keeping the warmth. I wanted to keep the warm and fuzzy feeling of the beach.

Okay, gotta go and take my medicine. Have a great weekend and Happy Halloween!

Fix-It-Friday!

Today is Fix-It-Friday at I Heart Faces, and I'm actually submitting my edit before 11pm! Can you believe I still happen to be in my robe? Nevermind the fact that I'm fully dressed and ready to go under my robe. It's just the thought of being in my robe that makes me believe it's a lazy day. Anyhow, here's my edit, starting with the original photo first:

I didn't want to crop it at all since the background colors are so beautiful. The best part of the fall season is the changing colors, and I wanted to bring those colors out.

Have a great weekend! If you'd like to see more edits of this photo, head on over to the I Heart Faces Website or click on the button below.

Fix-It-Friday!

Today is Fix-It-Friday at I Heart Faces, and although I started editing this photo this morning, I finally got back to it just now. You know, things like LIFE got in the way (go figure!) and it IS still Friday here on the West Coast... So here it is, starting with the original version first, and my edited version second:

I liked the feeling of the little girl being so small compared to the large field so I kept the crop to a minimum. I also thought the original photo brought the eye immediately to the pumpkins instead of the girl, so I washed out the color of the pumpkins. I also relate pumpkins and pumpkin patches to spookiness, so I added a ghostly haze to the photo with a little bit of warmth. There are friendly, warm ghosts, right? Like Casper?

Have a great weekend! And head on over to I Heart Faces to see more Fix-It-Friday edits!

Black and White? Or Gray and Gray?

I know the feeling. You've just captured the perfect photo. It's going to look amazing, and even better in black and white. The problem is, after you convert your photo to black and white, is it really a black and white photo? Or is it a gray and gray? Many black and white software adjustments turn well-balanced color photos into a flat, gray disasters. Simply desaturating the photo will turn your picture gray. You need to at least adjust the contrast in order to produce some true blacks and whites.

Let me show you an example. Here's a photo in color:

And here's the same photo, desaturated:

As you can see, the picture is just too gray. No blacks, no whites, just gray.

Let's adjust the contrast and brightness:

Ah, much better. Adjusting the contrast and brightness added not only black and white, but also some depth. Perfect! Now go and fix all those gray and gray photos and make them black and white!

Leftovers, Anyone?

So Valentine's Day has come and gone. The heart-shaped box filled with chocolates is now empty (no complaints here!) And the flowers? Well, before they wither away, I thought I'd enjoy them one last time. But this time they'll last forever.

Time to Get Dirty!

So yes, I love using textures on my photos. And yes, I also own Dirty Pictures, which is a plug-in program for Photoshop that makes it a million times faster to texturize your photos (and that's a plus when you're sitting at your computer for hours!) So when I sent a before and after photo to the crazy and nutty people at Get Totally Rad, I was surprised to hear that my photo is going to be featured on their "how to" site, which they cleverly call their "Recipes" site. Look for it starting on November 18! Before and After Dirty Pictures
